When potentiometric titration reaches its limits: Thermometric titration

Some applications cannot be performed using potentiometric sensors. In these cases, sensors observing changes in temperature (i.e., thermometric sensors) are needed.

Thermometric titration is a fast and robust analysis technique for high-throughput routine analysis. You only need one sensor for all thermometric applications. No sensor callibration and, with OMNIS, no additional hardware is required. You can simply upgrade any OMNIS titrator to combine potentiometric and thermometric titration in one system.

What is a potentiometric titrator?

A potentiometric titrator uses the difference in potential (mV) between the solution containing the analyte and a reference potential to determine the equivalence point and endpoint of a titration.

What equipment is needed for potentiometric titration?

The titrator is equipped with a reference electrode and an indicator electrode or with a combined sensor including both the reference and indicator electrode in one electrode. A stirrer and buret are also needed for potentiometric titrations.

What is an automatic titrator?

An automatic titrator, or autotitrator, performs the titration procedure automatically, including endpoint and equivalence point detection, results calculation, sample preparation, and sample series analysis. The steps performed by an automatic titration system from Metrohm are:

  1. The titrant is added with an automated piston buret. This ensures that the volume of titrant added is precise.
  2. A stirrer mixes the sample solution during the titration. This ensures reproducible results.
  3. The electrode detects the endpoint. This removes subjectivity of color changes present in manual titrations.
  4. The results are automatically calculated and displayed. This limits the risk of human errors.
