Different industrial electrolysis processes, such chlorine production and water desalination, require the use of costly electrolysis membranes. Therefore, purification of the brine has become an unavoidable step to preserve the membranes and to use less electricity during electrolysis. The level of impurities such as hardness (calcium and magnesium) is reduced in two treatment steps. After the secondary treatment with an ion exchange resin, impurity concentrations in brine can be reduced by a factor of 1000.
