Corrosion is an omnipresent disruption factor in refinery processes and one that can soon result in astronomical production costs. The potential for corrosion can however be conveniently controlled by monitoring the acid number (also referred to as the acid value) in refinery processes. An outstanding method for making this determination is thermometric titration, by which the total acid number is determined in less than a minute, but still in conformance with ASTM regulations.
This Application Bulletin describes the determination of the acid number in raw oil and refinery products through catalytic thermometric titration in accordance with ASTM D8045. The method captivates by its speed, low reagent consumption and the minimal amount of sensor care required
