Application report: Determination of heavy metals in fine dust

Each time we breathe in, innumerable particles contained in the air enter our bodies and become stored there – depending on the particle size, either in the respiratory tract or further along in the gas exchange zone, the pulmonary alveoli. Excessive pollutant loads can, among other things, result not only in such respiratory illnesses as bronchitis or lung cancer but also in cardiac and cardiovascular disease. A comprehensive monitoring of air quality and the determination of pollutant concentrations are thus indispensable. The use of a PILS sampling system and voltammetry from Metrohm enables semicontinuous determination of heavy metals in fine dust with a high temporal resolution.
