Determination of Polyacrylic Acid (PAA) in Simulated Steam Blowdown by Conductivity Detection

PAA is used in PWR nuclear power plants as dispersant in the secondary water cycle to minimize corrosion of steam generators. Traditionally, PAA is determined using UV at 200 nm. In this application, PAA was determined in a simulated steamblow down matrix using size exclusion chromatography with non-suppressed conductivity detection. Trizma base is used as an eluent to maximize the percentage of negatively charged monomeric units on the polymer. This improves its response via conductivity detection. This conductivity application demonstrates a simplistic, robust alternative to UV detection.
