Echalaz & Osborne (Pty) Ltd was established in 1971 to serve the general and shipping industry in the Durban area. In 1995, the company expanded by opening the Richards Bay Branch. In 2000, E&O as it became known, was acquired by a UK-based joint venture and traded as Alex Stewart TES Bretby (KZN) (Pty) Ltd until May 2009, when the company changed its name to Stewart Group Inspection and Analysis (Pty) Ltd following the group rebrand and acquisition during 2009.

In July 2011, ALS, a wholly owned subsidiary of ALS Limited, one of the largest commercial analytical groups in the world, acquired the Stewart Group. ALS operates more than 300 laboratories in over 50 countries across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. 

On 1st April 2013, the Durban Branch registered as a separate entity and now trades as ALS Analysis and Inspection – Durban (Pty) Ltd.

During the last 40+ years, the Durban Branch has established a strong client base in KZN and beyond, and has built a reputation for providing a high quality, independent, consulting analytical service. Managed by Mr Prakash (Shaun) Ramdeen, the Durban Branch undertakes both routine and non-routine Chemical and Microbiological analyses on environmental samples and a wide variety of commodities.

The Branch has been ISO/IEC 9001:2008 certified since 2009 and successfully upgraded its certification to ISO/IEC 9001:2015 in May 2018. In addition, the company obtained ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation for selected water analyses both in Chemistry and Microbiology in October 2008 and has since increased their scope of accreditation.

For many years the Metrohm 785 Titrino coupled with the Metrohm 760 Sample Changer has served them well for various analysis in water samples and commodity samples. While this system is still currently running and generating reliable results, it is on Metrohm’s list of obsolete instruments.

Since it was now time to upgrade and plan for the future, ALS Analysis and Inspection have opted to team up with Metrohm once again in finding the best possible solution that would improve sample throughput, remove tedious and repetitive manual work, and ease the ever-increasing time pressure. The system needed to be able to do pH, Conductivity, Alkalinity, and Chlorides in Water Samples with the capability of expanding on the scope of analysis in future. Metrohm put together a system that was able to meet and exceed all expectations in the Metrohm 856 Conductivity Module coupled with the Metrohm 888 Titrando and Metrohm 855 Robotic Titrosampler with Tiamo Full Software

Since the Metrohm 855 Robotic Titrosampler has a built-in titrator this set up allows for all the electrodes to be connected at once, eliminating the need to disconnect and reconnect probes for different applications. Both the Metrohm 855 Robotic Titrosampler and the Metrohm 888 Titrando are of Metrohms high end titrators that offer three modes of titration, namely DET, MET and SET, and has the capability to perform Karl Fischer titrations as well. The system accommodates for 59 beakers of 120ml beaker capacity. There are also interchangeable racks to cater for different sized beakers. The software is easy to use and everything is fully traceable. All the technician has to do is load up the sample rack, input the sample data and press start. Data storage and retrieval is no longer a nightmare as results are stored on the system database, can be backed up and can even be transferred to LIMS if need be. The system has a small footprint and does not take up too much space on the bench.
