Determination of acid number in acrylic acid

Acrylic acid is an important monomer for the fabrication of polyacrylic acid and numerous copolymers. Acrylic acid dimerizes spontaneously and, despite the presence of inhibitors, a large portion can be present as dimers, which reduces polymerization speed. The acid number is a very important quality parameter for the determination of acrylic acid quality. This Application Note describes the determination of the acid number through automatic potentiometric titration using potassium hydroxide as the titrant.
