Nitrite can be determined by polarography after conversion to diphenylnitrosamine (C6H5)2NNO. To ensure rapid and quantitative conversion, potassium thiocyanate is used as a catalyst. The reaction is carried out in an acidic solution at approx. pH = 1.5. The determination limit is 5 μg/L NO2-.
