In modern ion chromatography it is recommended that the
samples are always filtered prior to injection.
Membrane filters with pore sizes of 0.45 µm and
less are usually used for this type of filtration. However,
the relatively high price of these disposable filters
makes the use quite unattractive.
Metrohm Inline Ultrafiltration integrates
membrane filtration as a sample preparation step directly
into your in IC system. Equipped with an ultrafiltration
cell, it combines the inline filtration with automatic
sample processing.
The samples are placed directly on the turntable and
are then processed completely automatically by the Sample
Processor. The sample solution to be filtered passes
under the ultrafiltration membrane. At the same time
the filtrate is aspirated from the top of this membrane.
The peristaltic pump transfers the filtered sample to
the injection valve of the ion chromatograph for injection.
Ultrafiltration is particularly suitable for lightly
to moderately loaded samples such as drinking water,
surface water and wastewater, digestion solutions, extracts,
etc. Clean samples without particle load can be injected
directly using the same sample changer, i.e. without
filtration. With strongly loaded samples, e.g. fruit
juice containing fruit pulp, the Inline
Sample Dialysis is recommended.
