UV/VIS Compact IC: Determination of transition metals
Apart from alkali and alkaline earth metals, natural waters also contain
traces of transition metals. These can be determined with the new 844
UV/VIS Compact IC after derivatization with 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol
(PAR) at 510 nm.
The
PAR reagent is mixed into the eluent flow by means of the «Post Column Reactor
(PCR)». The two examples presented here, namely drinking water
and effluent water, show that the 844 UV/VIS Compact IC yields reproducible
and accurate results for the transition metals.
Results
The new compact UV/VIS
chromatograph allows to determine transition metals down
to the lower ppb range. The possibility of recording UV/VIS spectra
during the measurement
makes the determination of the optimum detection wavelength
very easy. The validation data show that the precision, linearity and
accuracy
obtained with the 844 UV/VIS Compact IC, combined with the
PCR, are excellent.
Conclusion
The measuring range of the new UV/VIS Compact IC spans the complete
ultraviolet and visible spectrum from 190 nm to 900 nm. This means that
the instrument can also be used for other applications of ion chromatography
with UV/VIS detection, such as nitrite and nitrate in sea water, bromate
in drinking water, sulfur compounds in sewage and chromium-containing
effluents of the tanning industry.
